Functional Training in Dublin: A Better Way to Train With Old Injuries

For many people, motivation is not the only thing needed in order for them to finally get consistent with an exercise regime. Old injuries that were never looked after properly accumulate in into niggles and injuries, and eventually become the reason that attempts to get fit again fail.

At Functional Patterns Dublin we help people to bridge the gap in this exact situation. Jumping back into the conventional gym routine can aggravate these issues and people generally don’t know where to start. The cycle of returning to the gym or sport, getting injured, going to the physiotherapist for management, only to end up back at square one can be tiresome.

People need a more considered approach to training. At some stage, they need to receive an education on the workings of their body, why they have the discomfort they have, and how they can improve their movement and posture through the right types of movement.

When Your Training Needs Change

Sean is one of the clients who attends our weekly group classes in Donabate. He spent years playing rugby, and like many with a sporting background, picked up niggles and injuries along the way. He was training for a specific job on the pitch, but the conventional ways of building strength started to cause problems. Now his training goals are different.

Rather than training purely for size on the rugby pitch, he is training for longevity and functionality. He wants to to stay active and maintain building strength in a sustainable way. This is something we see very often. The way we train in earlier years can often create problems that will persist into older years unless we change things up and begin to correct these movement issues.

What We Mean By Functional Training

Functional training can mean different things depending on who you ask. Generally something is functional if it helps to correct issues in the body. One exercise could be functional for one, but dysfunctional for another. What is more important is understanding your bodies biases and tendencies. Labeling an exercise or type of movement functional or not can be misleading.

Exercising in a way that challenges your bodies biases rather than feeding them is what makes something truly functional or not. This is why we focus on educating people about their own bodies behaviors. Then you can start to see what exercises are functional for you in your attempt to reprogram better movement habits.

Sean’s Experience

Sean currently trains in our Functional Patterns group classes in Donabate, North Dublin. He started as a one to one client and has been using our classes as a way to stay consistent with his training over the last 6 months. Even in a group setting, our classes allow our practitioners to account for every participants individual injury history as groups don’t exceed six people.

In the video below, Sean talks about his rugby background, some of the injuries he was left dealing with as a result, and how attempts at things like physiotherapy and message were unsuccessful.

Who Are Our Group Classes For?

Our classes are not only for former athletes. We work with a wide range of clients who want to train in a more sustainable way, get rid of aches and pains, all while building strength at the same time.

While people can jump straight into our beginner programme, we do recommend that people with an injury history attend private sessions to be properly assessed and understand the basics before entering the class pool.
