Standing, walking, running, and throwing are the primary movements that have shaped the evolution of the human body over millions of years. These actions have established our evolutionary blueprint as humans. In today’s world this is very difficult to imagine when we think of all of life’s modern conveniences, and the environment that we live in.
The Evolution of the Human Body
Just as birds must fly, fish must swim, and dogs must run on all fours, humans depend on these four essential movements, and at one time, they were the most fundamental tasks necessary for the human body to perform. We are essentially born to be walking, running and throwing machines.
Unfortunately, most of us are unable to execute these tasks without causing problems. People now hurt themselves or have pain simply going for a long walk, and running is out of the question for most. It’s not surprising given how far we have come from our human ancestors that once roamed the savannas.
Unlike any other animal, us humas have the ability to totally transform our environment and the way we live, to engineer food we are not designed to eat, and spend all day sitting at desks we are not supposed to inhabit.
The First Four
We believe that enhancing these first four functions should be the main focus of any exercise program, and by improving our ability to stand upright with good posture, walk, run, and throw, we can boost our overall health and reduce pain and the risk of injury.
