Low Back Pain in GAA: Biomechanics are Key

Here is a snapshot at Evan’s progress over 18 months using Functional Patterns. When Evan came to us first, he had already racked up a number of injuries. Between 2013 and 2019 he had 1 complete ACL rupture and 3 bucket handle meniscus tears. He had gone through traditional rehab each time but was left with some residual issues.

In addition to the above, he had back pain that could be quite debilitating after running or GAA training. Playing at a high level of sport requires a lot of training volume and staying injury free in order to progress. He would have to monitor his training load due to this back aggravation and wanted to get a solution.

Before

  • Pelvic and lumbar instability

  • More elastic recoil

Summary

Evan is a high level senior GAA footballer who came to us with a complicated history including a previous ACL tear, 3 Bucket Handle Meniscus tears, and constant back pain after training.

He trained here for over a year and left feeling totally pain free and moving much better. He got at transferring load, improved elastic recoil and became quicker. He improved his biomechanics and is much more confident while playing.

Most notable improvements are increases in his lateral rib cage movement capabilities, more spring in his step, and much more stability in his pelvic and lumbar area.
