Are we Disrespecting the Evolutionary Blueprint?

The same way an engineer can predict the resilience of a building based on its structural integrity, we can assess the resilience of the body by observing how it functions during standing, walking, running and throwing. As mentioned in another post, these first four functions are what we as humans have evolved to do.

Current Training and Rehab Practices

Most training and therapies are solely focused on the muscles and trying to manipulate them. Most of this either involves over conscious engagement of the muscles themselves, or passive hands on treatments that discount them entirely. We get sold over simplified solutions to complex problems relating to the body.

Traditional rehab and training don’t tend to account for how our body was designed in the first place, and what functions need to be present in order for us to move well and avoid pain and injury. There is a general assumption that if we strengthen or loosen muscles in any way, that these functions will naturally improve as a biproduct.

However, the context of how we do this matters greatly.

Functional Patterns

At Functional Patterns we have a function first approach. We focus on improving the major functions of the body in a way that allows our muscular and fascial systems to work the way nature has intended. We aim to create the right environment in the body for muscles to do what they need to, by orienting our training around the sequences found in the FP first 4. This allows us to train in a much more complete way, building strength, mobility, and stability all at once, and improve the natural functions our body has been built for.
