ACL Recovery: Gait Before & After

ACL Recovery: Gait Before & After

Great progress here from soccer player Luke. He arrived to us after tearing his ACL and needing surgery the year before. He completed 6 months of “traditional” rehab after the surgery in a well-known clinic but was unhappy with how he was moving following.

He had some discomfort in his knee but the main issue he had was that he felt he had lost yards on the pitch. This progress was made over 10 months of training using only Functional Patterns. He increased his speed, gained muscle and at the time had been selected to play for the Irish u15 national soccer team. He now plays in England at professional level.

Before

  • Small stride length
  • Lack of hip extension
  • Limited arm drive powering stride
  • Excessive pelvic shifting

After

  • Increased stride length
  • Better arm drive
  • Loaded glute activation on landing
  • Improved pelvic control and lateral rib cage movement

From Luke

I came to the lads in FP Dublin after injuring my ACL. After the recovery and strengthening I had been advised to do, I felt I wasn’t as quick as I was before the injury. We used exercises that are specific to running and the movements I have to make on the pitch and I’m delighted with the results. I’m quicker, my stride is bigger and I’m more confident that I won’t get injured.
